This goes double when we’re discussing anime or anime waifus, since fans can equate good writing to lots of screen time. So it’s time to piss off a bunch of people as I stamp their favorite waifus with the “mid” or “trash” seal of disapproval. These are my picks for the most overrated waifus in all of anime. Buckle up, it’s going to be a bumpy and opinionated ride!
10. Quetzalcoatl
Anime: Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid I want to start things off with Quetzalcoatl as she isn’t necessarily bad. In fact, she’s okay as a supporting character. But claiming that she’s the best girl in this show is just ludicrous. In fact, claiming that she’s anything but mid should land you a one-way ticket to horny jail. She doesn’t really do anything aside from giving fanservice! Her dialogue always paints her as an airhead, and she’s the only dragon character that doesn’t even want to fight. So you can’t even say that she’s a badass! If you just like jiggle physics, I won’t judge you. But this character can’t even stand in the same ring as Tooru when it comes to raw waifu stats.
9. Eris Boreas Greyrat
Anime: Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Just like with Quetzalcoatl, I don’t mind Eris’ character that much – but claiming that she’s anywhere near Roxy’s caliber should be considered some form of delusion. In the past few years, I’ve seen a lot of anime fans pull away from the tsundere archetype. For the most part, I’m still faithful to the cause – but Eris just pushes it too far. She’s such a brat that her introduction literally had her servant kick her teeth in because of how annoying she is. And while she does get better over time, her bursts of aggression just through me off completely. Plus she made my boy Rudeus cry. And that’s an automatic -1000 waifu points in my book. Roxy on the other hand would never commit such a sin!
8. Raphtalia
Anime: The Rising of the Shield Hero As I’m writing this, season two is about a week away, but hasn’t come out yet. So I might be eating my words soon – but until then I’ll rant. Don’t worry Raphtalia fans, I’m not putting her in the trash tier. In fact, she’s the most mid anime waifu I’ve seen in my life. I can’t say that she’s not likable. And some of her pouts do put a smile on my face. But she just turns into a blob later in the series. Her entire personality revolves around Naofumi as she can barely breathe unless he tells her to do so. She’s far from unique in that sense. But since her backstory is quite tragic and her initial relationship with Naofumi was so odd, I expected a lot more than this. She’s just serviceable to the plot, and a good medium for pumping out cute screenshots and GIFs.
7. Hinata Hyuuga
Anime: Naruto: Shippuden Clowning on Sakura is like a right of passage for an anime fan. In fact, we clown on her so much that every other female character just seems perfect in comparison. But that’s not always the case. The original series Hinata was just annoying. She was a walking stutter that only cared about Naruto and somehow managed to lose every fight she’s ever been in. We then move on to Shippuden, and I honestly hoped that she’d get some backbone by this point. But aside from that one moment during the Pain arc, Hinata still contributed nothing to the show. Unless you count fawning even more over Naruto as character development. Even in Boruto, I’m not all that impressed (although some improvement has been made). Overall, just a mid-tier waifu that gets praised to hell and back due to a lack of competition.
6. Albedo
Anime: Overlord Just like with Quetzalcoatl, this is a horny jail character. The only difference is that Albedo would probably meet you there! Like seriously – I know it’s explained within the show itself, but Albedo is just excessive when it comes to her love for Ainz. She’s like a walking blob of every thirst post in the known universe, and I honestly don’t get the hype. Shalltear at least has her own thing going on. She fights people, terrifies me, gets possessed, and changes in some way throughout the show. Albedo on the other hand is just making the show really awkward to watch while on speakers. She feels beyond overrated to me, as her character could be swapped out with any ecchi character and the plot would be exactly the same. Which is a shame, as her design is pretty cool.
5. Zero Two
Anime: Darling In The Franxx Upon reading her name, you either agreed with your entire soul, or you’re currently sending dead ferrets to my home address. However, it has to be said: Zero Two is simply overrated. I say that because I honestly can’t remember a single thing this character did, even though she ruled the Internet for like two years. Besides the word “darling” and the fact that she caught a fish in her mouth, I can’t remember anything notable this character has said or done. Hell, I can’t even remember what her character was like. Was she mean? Nice? I don’t have the slightest idea. And since this is the first pick so far where I genuinely find them completely forgettable, she’s the perfect candidate to transition us into the trash tier.
4. Haruhi Suzumiya
Anime: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Although I always liked the concept of the show, I found Haruhi to be the weakest link. This is because she genuinely doesn’t seem like a good person. She basically treats her friends like bags of meat or tools (especially Mikuru) and I’m pretty sure she’s broken the law several times during her shenanigans. Plus she’s just beyond self-obsessed. It goes to the point where I’d honestly believe you if you told me that she designed the year 2020 because she didn’t feel like going outside. Not once did she show any form of actual empathy. And I for one will not be bought out by a stupid dance and a cute visual design.
3. Elizabeth Liones
Anime: The Seven Deadly Sins Elizabeth is a worse Zero Two. I genuinely can’t remember a single thing she has ever done or said. She’s just the damsel in distress that needs to be saved every few episodes. I guess she becomes a healer or something later on, but that doesn’t change the dynamic at all. Even though she’s a princess and an angel, her entire character is revolved around Meliodas. I honestly think the writers didn’t even give her emotions that don’t service Meliodas in some way. Has she ever been bored, curious, or (god forbid) angry? I honestly don’t think that she has. She’s either happy with Meliodas, or sad because Meliodas isn’t there. Even by wet blanket standards, Elizabeth is just killing me. Especially when you compare her to someone like Merlin. Overall, just trash tier.
2. Asuna Yuuki
Anime: Sword Art Online We started off with Zero Two, moved on to Elizabeth, and then hit our stride with Asuna – the ultimate forgettable waifu that’s treated like a goddess. With Elizabeth, I at least remember the things she did. With Asuna, I just remember that she was in the show and that Kirito saved her from someone at some point. I’m not even exaggerating when I say that the only imprint this character has left on my memory is a name and a face. And even after watching some episodes back, that opinion hasn’t changed. Thematically, her blandness does pair well with Kirito. I say that because he’s also been written in a way where everyone and their mother can self-insert themselves into the story. They’re just walking blank slates. And I honestly don’t understand how anyone can be drawn to them.
1. Yuno Gasai
Anime: Future Diaries Yuno is (as of this writing) the 40th most favorited anime character on MAL – and that fact makes me want to post a cringe “society” meme. I know watching anime is a form of escapism. But why would anyone want to escape into the loving arms of a crazy person? Her entire character is precisely built around the fact that you’d never want to actually meet her in public. Why is a person who’d kill your mom out of jealousy given the precious waifu crown? Is this some Freudian experiment that has gone on for far too long and now no one can admit to it? I genuinely can’t understand why people love her so much. Someone caring for you is nice. But someone obsessing over you is an issue that you can handle through the legal system. And there’s a good reason for it as well! Overall she’s just a trash waifu, and I’ve gotta heavily question your taste if you think that a yandere would make your life any better.
